So *hot* I *hot* have *hot* arrived *hot* in *hot* DR!

Ok so I just thought I would tell you all that it is freaking hot here! And um yeah the flight was um well, just short of torture and um the two hour (out of my freaking way) drive back to Santiago was even worse but...the company was nice =). AHHH don't touch me I'm hot...don't breathe on me...I'm hot...don't talk to me...I'm hot...DON'T LOOK AT ME I'M HOT...ok well once I can finally thinking about anything other than the fact that it's freaking HOT, I will start up regular sessions again. In the mean time I will be taking pics and waiting for someone (hopefully being led by his "higher power" and given angel wings) to bring my pc and my four other big boxes of stuff. Not sure where I am going to put everything since my room is the size of my closet back in the US but I will live with it. I will have a nice in depth post of it all later but for now I am FREAKIN HOT so I must leave before my brain melts and I have to go find some cold water to pour on it...

*runs of melting*

Oh, by the way, here are pictures from my bedroom window of what I will wake up to in the mornings!

This is my building, well not my building but the building across the way that looks the same as my building.

Last day in memphis...

Well, I didn't accomplish what I came here to accomplish and that was to have a computer my sister can use confidentally. Her PC, that is no longer working, went down on hmm...Monday night I believe. I tried every anti-virus software she had on her pc, then tried rebooting, and lost the ability to go into Windows ME (It had a dual boot system with Windows 2000 and Windows ME) and also tried going into safe mode but couldn't even get to the system restore so I rebooted again and then it came up with the Compaq Bios screen...so after multiple attempts at fixing it and lack of time to try anything else...to no avail IT IS DEAD. I called Compaq which told me that it was out of warranty and that it would be 40.00 to send out some updates...I decided to try Best Buy. Best Buy said they don't even diagnose dual boot systems. I'm hoping that once I get settled in DR I might be able to try something else remotely. My sister is going to have to probably find a boot disk for Windows 2000. Then we might have to reformat the HD and just go from there. I personally would like for her to stay on the eMac that she has now. She was supposed to be sending it to her bf in Cali but I think I have convinced her to keep it. Only thing she needs is more memory because it only has 128MB right now. I have to admit, I know absolutely nothing about Macs so she is going to be on her own as where to find it and how to get it installed. So, basically, we had to pack up the new 64MB vid card, two 256MB of memory, and two webcams (both not the right high end model camera that would be compatible with Mac). At least I'll be getting my money back, I hope.

I still have not packed...not that it matters since I can never seem to sleep the night before I fly anywhere. I just can't wait until I get settled...I can't really take all this traveling...without a place to really call home.

Anyhow...I am not sure when I will be back online...we still have to get the line installed at the place i am staying in DR. I heard it might take about two weeks...^%$&*^...I guess I will survive. At least that will give me time to take some nice pics.

Well, I am off to pack, AGAIN, and maybe get a few minutes of sleep.

See you all soon,

Didn't want to miss a third day...

anyway, I thought this was interesting...

Thanks to Franklin, hot and sticky weather expected for
weekend

By Ken Kaye Staff
Writer Posted July 23 2005

South Florida should expect heat-index readings as high as 105
degrees over the weekend, thanks in part to Tropical Storm Franklin, the
National Weather Service in Miami said."The heat is going to be the big
issue over the next few days," said meteorologist Eric Christensen.
"It's going to be hot and sticky and we're not getting any breeze."

Today's forecast calls for the mercury to reach the mid-90s, about 4 to
5 degrees warmer than normal. With the high humidity, the "feels-like"
temperature could be as much as 10 degrees warmer. The chance of rain: 30
percent.

Florida is caught between Franklin, which was in the Atlantic well north of
the Bahamas on Friday, and another tropical disturbance in the northwest
Caribbean, creating high pressure over this region, Christensen said.

High pressure invites hot air and makes it difficult for cooling rainstorms
to move in. Even nights will be hovering near 80 degrees, he said.

Yet another tropical wave, dry and with no moisture, is expected to pull a large Sahara
dust storm over Florida by Monday or Tuesday.

The dust originally was sand lifted from the Sahara Desert.

Although no records were broken, high temperatures were in the low 90s
across South Florida on Friday.

The weather service is advising the elderly and those with health problems
to avoid exertion and seek air conditioning.

Franklin, meanwhile, was forecast to make a right turn into the Atlantic
toward Bermuda.

Which leads me to the next story I found...

4x4s whip up a worldwide dust storm

20 August 2004 07:09

Dust storms emanating from the Sahara have increased tenfold in 50 years, contributing to climate change as well as threatening human health and destroying coral reefs thousands of kilometres away.

And one major cause is the replacement of the camel by four-wheel drive vehicles as the desert vehicle of choice.

Andrew Goudie, professor of geography at Oxford University, blames the process of Toyotarisation -- a coinage reflecting the near-ubiquitous desert use of Toyota Land Cruisers -- for destroying a thin crust of lichen and stones that has protected vast areas of the Sahara from the wind for centuries.

Four-wheel drive use, along with overgrazing and deforestation, were the major causes of the world's growing dust storm problem, the scale of which was much bigger than previously realised, Goudie, master of St Cross College, told the International Geographical Congress in Glasgow on Thursday.

"I am quite serious, you should look at deserts from the air, scarred all over by wheel tracks, people driving indiscriminately over the surface breaking it up. Toyotarisation is a major cause of dust storms. If I had my way I would ban them from driving off-road."

The problem has become so serious that an estimated 2-3-billion tons of dust is carried away on the wind each year. Storms in the Sahara transport dust high into the atmosphere and deposit it as far away as Greenland and the United States.

Britain was seeing increasing levels of "blood rain" in spring that came direct from the Sahara, Goudie said. From an aircraft over the Alps in summer it was possible to see the telltale colour of red dust on the mountains.

Although the storms are mainly particles of quartz, smaller than grains of sand, they also contain salt and quantities of pesticide and herbicide which can cause serious health problems. Microbe-laden dust from storms is also credited with carrying cattle diseases such as foot and mouth.

The world's largest single dust source is the Bodélé depression in Chad, between an ever-shrinking Lake Chad (now a twentieth of its size in the 1960s) and the Sahara. The depression releases 1 270-million tons of dust a year, 10 times more than when measurements began in 1947, according to Goudie's research.

Taking the whole Sahara, and the Sahel to the south, dust volumes had increased four to sixfold since the 1960s. Countries worst affected were Niger, Chad, northern Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania, the research found.

Smothering of coral reefs

But the effects went far beyond. In the Caribbean, scientists had directly linked the death of coral reefs to smothering by dust which had travelled 4 800km.

African dust had also found its way to Greenland, Goudie said. While white ice reflected sunlight and remains frozen, the dark dust on top absorbed the sun's heat, causing the ice to melt and accelerating the raising of sea levels.

Goudie said it was as yet uncertain what other effects the dust was having on the climate. The airborne dust both reflected sunlight back into space and blanketed the earth holding the heat in. When it dropped in the sea it fertilised the plankton which absorbed carbon dioxide and cooled the ocean surface, creating fewer clouds and less rain -- a vicious circle which made the dust problem worse.

Where the dust source was the dried-up bed of a salt lake or sea, salt deposited from the storms could ruin agricultural land, leading to more deserts and more dust. There might be more serious consequences for human health emerging elsewhere in the world.

The Aral Sea in central Asia had almost dried up, according to the research. Its inflowing rivers were used for irrigating cotton, causing the seabed to be contaminated by pesticide toxins which were now being blown about in the dust. People who have breathed in the dust have serious allergic reactions.

Goudie also warned that climate change might cause dust problems to return to the US prairies. While improved agricultural practices, wind breaks and higher rainfall had cured the Dust Bowl of the 1930s (immortalised in John Steinbeck's novel the Grapes of Wrath), the conditions were once again similar. Dust storms were now common in the US and could lead to a disease, Valley Fever, an allergic reaction to pesticides in the dust which caused inflammation of the nose and throat, killing several people a year.

In China, extensive efforts had been made to plant trees to hold back the dust, and increases in rainfall had also helped, the study found. However, large dust storms were still emanating from the vast deserts in the north, which included the Lopnor nuclear test site -- raising fears that storms could interfere with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and might contain radioactive particles. The Chinese have said they were confident this would not happen.

Choking storms hit far and wide
  • Dust storms are typically 200km wide and carry 20 to 30-million tons of dust. Some carry up to 100-million tonnes
  • Worldwide dust in the atmosphere is predicted to be 2-billion-3-billion tons this year
  • Florida receives more than 50% of the African dust that hits the US, causing increased respiratory problems
  • Mauritania, which had two dust storms a year in the early 1960s, now has 80 a year
  • The worst dust storm to reach Britain was in 1903 when an estimated 10-million tons landed from the Sahara - Guardian Unlimited © Guardian Newspapers Limited 2004

Who would have ever thought that the people who live in the Sahara would ever give up using camels. So yeah I guess I will be staying in on Monday and possibly Tuesday other than going to pick up my sister at the airport! Yeah I had other stuff to blog about but I thought that this might be a bit more informative, especially since a friend of mine from Florida who is usually in bed by like 9pm called me just to tell me about this.

A day at the spa...

was just what I needed! Thanks to T-mobile I was able to spend a nice day at Gould's Day Spa & Salon in Memphis, Tennessee. The day started out at 830am (way earlier than I normally ever wake up). I was greeted by two receptionist that showed me to the spa area, away from the hustle and bustle of the Salon. I was seated at the beginning of a long hallway of doors that had "Please Be Quiet, Session in Progress" along each one of them. The theme was asian style, the colors were warm brown complimented by a soft cream, the lights were low and the music sounded Japanese-ish. Carla, was my first technician and she was going to be doing my aromatherapy wrap and facial. She was very prompt and took me to the preparation room where there were scented candles burning. I was given my own locker, a large engulfing robe and instructions to use the restroom if I needed to and wait for her to return shortly. Once I finished she guided me to the first room where the lights were much more dim, the music more noticeable and she instructed me to remove all of my clothing, lay on the bed between the towel and the sheets and once again wait for her to return. The first thing that I noticed was that the bed was already warm. The towels and sheets were freshly clean. Carla returned and asked if I wanted a relaxing treatment or more of an energizing treatment. Once choosing a relaxing treatment she put together a concoction of oils and began our session with a soft, dry brush, full body exfoliation. This was followed by a moderate massage with the warm oils applied using a soft cotton swab. She then fully covered me in a warm towel and topped it with "wrapping" me up in a warm white sheet. I think at that point I was so relaxed I was falling asleep or maybe I was just drifting into unconsciousness but not totally unaware. She started into the facial with a cool cloth across my forehead. Then I remember both warm lotions or oils followed by cool ones. I do remember noticing at one point I was alone in the room or maybe my technician was just "standing by". I'm not quite sure. After that I remember her waking me and saying that I should put my robe back on and then meet her in the hallway so she can guide me to my next technician who will do the full body massage.

AHHH...just reliving it makes me sleepy *yawn*

Night night gotta take my sister to the airport tomorrow morning!

Bookstores

I am quite sure that everyone else in the world likes to read more than I do so I had an idea...not a grand idea but just a bit of helpful info for those that might need it. As some of you might know, I lost my "Idiot's Guide to Conversational Japanese" in the airport when I flew in to visit my sister. I was kinda pissed because I had just bought the book for about 25US. I even tried to go back and look for it. I didn't realize that so many people were interested in speaking Japanese, cause that damn book sure wasn't there. Anyway, I finally broke down and decided to buy another one but first I needed to find a bookstore and well, there were only TWO in memphis, Bookstar and Davis Kid. If there were more, the locals sure as hell didn't know about it. So basically my idea is to try to comment on a good bookstore whenever I see one...and I STILL WISH I COULD CATEGORIZE MY DAMN POSTS! If anyone has any ideas, please leave a comment.

Ever meet someone...

that makes you feel stupid and yet glad to be yourself all at the same time?

Anyway, I just finished reading this blog from this girl that I don't even know. It's funny how some people use alot of fancy words to make themselves seem so smart but in the end they are just as lost as the majority of the world. I'm glad I am not one of those people who are out to impress everyone else...I am just out to make my life as happy and as enjoyable as possible. I will truthfully say that I am not ALWAYS happy with myself but because we are our own worst enemy/critic is probably why I end up not being as happy as I would like. I admit there are a few people in my life that I like to impress but I don't feel it necessary to impress every living soul that I don't even know every waking and sleeping moment of the day. They are so lost in trying to impress other people that they don't even realize they are doing it anymore and have no idea who they really are. I think that the "blonde mentality" doesn't just go with being blonde.

Ok I really need some positivity here...sometimes I get so caught up in how stupid people are. It seriously shocks me sometimes. I know I am complaining but I seriously hate people that complain, which brings me to another person. Deep in my heart I guess I am hoping that the person I am talking about that COMPLAINS ALL THE FREAKIN TIME, will actually read this and know that I am talking about them. When you have absolutely nothing positive to say, EVER, how can you wonder why people don't like you? In life there is the future, no matter what age you are. One would think that once you get to a certain age that you would just forget all the negativity in your life but NO...some people just take the negativity and try to pass it on to the next generation...well I won't have it!!! I don't care if I have to sit there and bite my tongue until I am bleeding I will not join in. I can understand if once in awhile you get on a soapbox of negativity...I can even understand if you get on a soapbox of negativity for a whole day, BUT YOUR WHOLE LIFE???? How can you teach people that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all, when you don't even follow the rule? Basically, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!

How the hell did I get here, oh, I was looking around at different layouts on other people's blogs, that's what happened. I did figure out how to add in different links and different categories. One thing I would like on this blog is the categorize feature. Makes it alot easier to group your entries, since I like to comment on movies, dining out, travel, etc. I'll have to look around a bit more on how to put that into this blog.

I always seem to get a bit sidetracked...anyway...here is a bit of info that I didn't know.
http://clubbeat.tv/blog/?p=65

Anyway, I am off my soapbox and a bit tired!

Night night,
Lotus

Thanks for the link...

I would like to add...

I brought my receipt over to Target with all the stuff on it that I had bought. The items were as much as 25.00 more at Target than Best Buy or they just didn't carry the items and in the case of the webcam, they didnt even carry name brand webcams. I think they only had one, which was off-brand. I think I truely did get a "Best Buy".

Oyasumi,
Lotus

Had a long day...

Let's see, today was a bit of a whirlwind day...for a typical woman, going to Sears, Lane Bryant, Victoria's Secret, Marshalls, and only God knows where else, it probably would have been heaven...but for me...it wasn't heaven until we reached Best Buy ^^. Before I walked in the door I was ready to go home, tired as hell, bored, my feet hurt, and just sick of shopping...the second I walked into Best Buy I forgot about all that stuff. I picked up 512mb of RAM (she had 128mb), a Creative WebCam Instant (she didn't have a webcam before and we are also going to be returning it tomorrow because the Creative WebCam Instant has between a 15-30 frames per second or refresh rate but doesn't have a built in microphone, the Creative WebCam Live will have a built in microphone and I'm sure the refresh rate goes up too), and a task chair (my sister had an old fold up card-table chair..."not comfortable at all" is an understatement). The "Best Buy" of all was the Canon PowerShot A510 Digital Camera, rechargable batteries and charger, and last but not least 128mb SD Card for my trip to Dominican Republic. WOOHOO! Hmm, did I leave anything out? Oh yeah, I did....a bunch of girly clothes...but yeah back to the good stuff...I already put the memory in...unbelievable the change. It's hard to explain the difference to someone who might not know that much about computers but I think my sister grasped the difference when I told her that we put four times the memory in her pc than she originally had and I also showed her all the different screens she could open up at one time, that they open up faster, and the pc doesn't lock up when you try to just change the freakin TIME /pif...then we installed the webcam and contacted my sister's bf in California. While they were getting reunited with each other and their four year old son via webcam I took the opportunity to check out my new camera. I will say that I didn't want a camera that would take over the world but this one sure feels like it can... I am extremely impressed with the ease of use, the clarity, and 4x zoom. I can't wait to start using it, especially in Dominican Republic.
Anyway, here is an example of my first pic with my new camera.

Well, goodnight all and I hope to post more pics very soon...hmm...those cell phone pics suck compaired to this.

Morning...

Konnichiwa to whomever is reading at 228am, anyway, dinner was awesome!! For the first time ever I actually tried sake, not bad at all. For a single serving it comes in a small bottle with an asian style shot glass turned upside down on top of it and with about four shots worth inside. After asking the host, I found that it is actually drank either in shot style, dropped in a mug of beer or as a shot with a chaser of either Kahlua or Amaretto ( I can't seem to remember which one he said). It's clear and as for the taste it's like warm vodka. I was always under the impression that it was dark with a Guinness beer type of taste. Guess I was wrong. Oh and I also tried plum wine....mmmm, I could so drink my weight in that stuff!!! For those of you that have not tasted it, it's very sweet and very plumish tasting...before you actually take a sip of it, try smelling it first, very enjoyable, more like a dessert wine. The company wasn't half bad as well. Geoffrey and I went to Taisho in Boca Raton where the host actually remembered us and even welcomed us by saying, "Wow, it's been awhile" and I believe it was about a year ago since our first visit. I had also brought my dad once back in March. The sushi has gotten more fresh b/c they make it as you order it now. The sushi used to be premade and then they just picked it off of the tray as you ordered it, well most of it anyway. I am certainly more pleased this time. The ambiance of this place is top of the line. However, it still does not compare to Mr. Sushi, in Tamarac. The freshness there is just unbeatable. As for the movie, War of the Worlds was a awesome! Yes, I agree it was scarey. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time going, "Oh My GOD!". Ok I'm not going to ruin it for those of you who haven't seen it...but I give it an A-. A especially due to the special effects but a - because it wasn't as climactic as I would have liked. If it wasnt for Geoffrey explaining a little at the end (he read the book and I didn't) I would have been left hanging a little more. I mean the ending was understandable but you end up feeling like you were 99% there.

Overall...I give the night an A+ though...very nice for my last night in Boca Raton, before I am off to Memphis, Tennessee.

Well, I am off to pack, yeah yeah yeah, still not done yet! OH WAIT!!!

I forgot the most awesome part...Geoffrey and I were in Books-A-Million, I think, well, one of those book stores...anyway, since my guildmate JC, my friend Crystal and Geoffrey of course, oh and well I am thinking of going to Japan, are learning Japanese, I picked up The Complete Idiot's Guide to Conversational Japanese. I figured I needed something to read on the plane rides. Kinda thought it was hilarious that there was The Complete Idiot's Guild to Conversational Japanese and also Japanese For Dummies....Geoffrey remarked..."So you have decided that you are an idiot and not a dummy?"...../PIF (Ragnarok for F*** OFF!)

OK OFF TO PACKING

Comment brought over from

I'm glad to see you blogging. I just noticed that when i tried to post a comment it says you must be signed into MSN to post one. That really really sucks big time. Since your blog is so young... would you think of moving it to blogspot.com and leave corporate america behind?
